  Press Release: John Talvin Award Winner (12/3/2001)  
PRESS RELEASE: December, 2001

As part of its concert season, the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra is proud to present the annual John Tavlin Award For “Outstanding Contributions to Music in Lincoln Nebraska”.

Created for the celebration of the 25th anniversary season, the John Tavlin Award is named in honor of one of the founding members of the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra. This award, presented annually, is given to an individual or organization that has given outstanding support to musical performance, especially in the field of big band and jazz music, in Lincoln, Nebraska.

In 2000, the first award was presented to Bobby Layne, leader of the Bobby Layne Orchestra and owner of the Pla-Mor Ballroom, where live music has been a regular feature for many years for the dancing and listening pleasure of the residents of Lincoln and the surrounding area.

This year’s award winner is the Nebraska Arts Council. The NAC provides support for the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra and other performing arts groups through their Basic Support Grants which provide annual operating support to eligible community, volunteer, and discipline based arts organizations. They also make contributions to groups through the Nebraska Cultural Endowment. Select Nebraska artists and nonprofit arts organizations, including the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra, are included in the NAC Artists Directory, used by nonprofit organizations to select performances & exhibits Representatives of the Nebraska Arts Council will receive the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra’s John Tavlin Award for “Outstanding Contributions To Music In Lincoln, Nebraska” at the NJO’s Christmas and All that Jazz concert on Tuesday, December 11th at the Cornhusker Hotel in Lincoln.   Press Release: Lincoln Municipal Band: Free Concert (11/11/2001)  

The Lincoln Municipal Band will present a free concert on Friday, November 16, 2001 at 3:45 pm in the Lied Center for Performing Arts at 301 North 12th Street in Lincoln, Nebraska. The concert is being presented in conjunction with the Nebraska Music Educators Association annual conference.  This concert will take the place of the previously scheduled concert that was to be held at Nebraska Wesleyan on Sunday, November 4th

Selections for this performance include “Pas Redouble (Double-Quick Step)” by Camille Saint-Saens, “Over the Hills and Far Away” by Percy Grainger, “Puszta” by Jan Van der Roost, “Easter Monday on the White House Lawn” by John Philip Sousa, “The Circus Bee March” by Henry Fillmore, “The Cowboys” by John Williams, and several others.

Mr. Robert Krueger will be the conductor for this concert. A graduate of UNL, where he received a Bachelor's degree in Music Education and a Master of Music degree, Mr. Krueger has been a music teacher in the Lincoln Public Schools since 1985.  He was the instrumental music teacher at Southeast High School from 1985-1995. In 1989 he was named the nation's outstanding young high school band director by the American School Band Directors Association.  He is currently teaching elementary instrumental music at Maxey and Beattie schools, and

  Press Release: Nebraska Jazz Orchestra: Christmas and All That Jazz (11/10/2001)  

November, 2001:  PRESS RELEASE

 

Celebrating its 26th Anniversary Season, the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra proudly announces its second concert of the 2001-2002 season with a program entitled Christmas and All That Jazz, featuring Metropolitan Opera star, Ariel Bybee.

 

The concert will be held at the Cornhusker Hotel, 333 13th Street, Lincoln, on Tuesday, December 11th at 7:30 p.m.  Priority seating for season ticket members only starts at 7:00-7:15, and general admission seating begins at 7:15 for tickets purchased at the door.

 

General admission tickets may be purchased at the concert or ordered in advance by contacting the business office at Arts Incorporated, (402) 477-8446, 216 North 11th Street, Suite 202 in Lincoln, NE, 68508-1401. Tickets purchased at the door are:  $7 for students, $12 for senior citizens, and $15 for adults.

 

Guest Vocalist Ariel Bybee, was recently described by Opera News as having been “a prominent Mezzo at the Metropolitan Opera for eighteen seasons.”  At the Met and elsewhere she has performed such roles as Carmen, Hansel, Nicklausse, Suzuki, and Jenny in Kurt Weill’s Mahagonny.  Her many concert engagements include performances in Elektra, conducted by Lorin Maazel at Carnegie Hall, and by James Levine at the Ravinia Festival.  Miss Bybee can be heard in Franco Zeffirelli’s motion picture of La Traviata, singing the ro

The Nebraska Brass announces their second concerts of the 2001-2002 season:

"A Nebraska Brass Christmas" is the title of these concerts, which will include the following selections:  "Joy to the World," "Coventry Carol," "Noel Nouvelet," "Jingle Bells," "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," "We Three Kings," "Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "Sleight Ride," and others.

  Press Release: Thursday Night Jazz Series (11/8/2001)  

The Thursday Night Jazz Series is proud to announce that the Joe Cartiwright Trio will perform at world famous  P.O. Pears, located at 322 South 9th Street, Lincoln, NE, on Thursday, November 16th from 7:30 - 10:00 pm.  The Kansas City Group was originally scheduled to perform on September 20th, but was rescheduled due to circumstances surrounding the events of September 11th.

Pianist Joe Cartwright has performed with such jazz luminaries as Bill Watrous, Rob McConnell, Karrin Allyson, and Kevin Mahogany.  He has produced and performed on more than 15 recordings in the last 17 years.

This concert is sponsored by Butch Berman and the Berman Music Foundation.

  Press Release: Monday Night Big Band (10/30/2001)  

The Monday Night Big Band continues its weekly performances of "Monday Night Jazz" at P.O.Pears, located at 322 South 9th Street, Lincoln, NE.  This is entertainment at its best for the whole family!  The band plays from 7:30 - 10:00 pm each and every Monday night with two 15 minutes breaks at 8:15 and 9:15 pm.

Admission is $5 for adults and $4 for students with valid I.D.

Food and full beverage service is available.

  Press Release: NJO - Volume VII Announced (9/28/2001)  
The Nebraska Jazz Orchestra proudly announces the release of their latest CD entitled "LIVE!." The CD is Volume VII in the group's series of released recordings and includes special guests, Bobby Watson and Kirk Garrison.

The music on the CD was recorded live in concert at the historic Pla-Mor Ballroom during the 1999-2000 concert season and at the Cornhusker Hotel during the 2000-2001 season. It includes such jazz standards as "Fascinatin' Rhythm" by George Gershwin and "Easy to Love" by Cole Porter, as well as exciting newer pieces by local composers, Randy Snyder and Scott Vicroy. Performances by nationally known artists, Bobby Watson and Kirk Garrison, are also included.

The CD will be available for purchase at Nebraska Jazz Orchestra concerts, beginning with the October 5th performance at the Lied Center for the Performing Arts, featuring special guest artist, Dave Stryker. 2001 Nutcracker Auditions

 

The Lincoln Midwest Ballet Company and Artistic Director, Shari Shell-True would like to announce the 2001 Nutcracker.  The production is now in its 17th season and has become a Lincoln tradition.  This year’s performances will be held at the Lied Center for Performing Arts on Saturday, December 15, 2001, with a 2:00 p.m. and a 7:00 p.m. show and a 2:00 p.m. show on Sunday, December 16, 2001.

 

Group Auditions will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2001 at Mabel Lee Hall on the UNL Campus, located at 14th and Vine Streets, in room 304.

The Nebraska Jazz Orchestra proudly announces its 26th Anniversary Season for 2001-2002 with an exciting series of concerts in Lincoln.

 

With the exception of the first concert, which will be held at The Lied Center For The Performing Arts, the Lincoln concerts will all take place at the Cornhusker Hotel, 333 South 13th Street.  The Valentine Cocktail/Dance will be at the Country Club of Lincoln. Season Concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m.  At the Cornhusker Hotel concerts, priority seating for season members only is from 7:00-7:15, and general admission begins at 7:15 for tickets purchased at the door.  The Valentine Cocktail/Dance begins at 6:30 p.m.

 

As part of our 26th Anniversary celebration, we will also be featuring several exciting and nationally recognized guest artists.
