Nebraska Jazz Orchestra presents
"Tribute to the Big Band Era," with Ed Love and Dean Haist

The Nebraska Jazz Orchestra announces the second concert of its 2013-2014 season, "Tribute to the Big Band Era," featuring saxophonist and flutist Ed Love and trumpeter Dean Haist, both veterans of the NJO. The Big Band tribute concert is Tuesday, November 19 at The Cornhusker Marriott, 333 South 13th Street in Lincoln, Nebraska, at 7:30 p.m.

The NJO pays its respects to the beloved Big Band era, performing timeless classics from road warriors Count Basie, Stan Kenton, Duke Ellington, Oliver Nelson, Maynard Ferguson and others. Selections will include "King Porter Stomp," "Moten Swing," "Concerto for Cootie," "The Nearness of You," "Groove Merchant," "Send in the Clowns," "Flute Salad," and more.

Ed has been in the NJO since 1978 and has been NJO's music director for more than 30 years. He has performed with many fine musicians during that time, not the least of whom are the musicians in this November 19 concert. Ed frequently plays in the pit of the Orpheum Theater in Omaha for touring Broadway shows, most recently 12 performances of "The Book of Mormon." He plays clarinet in the Nebraska Chamber Players, Lincoln Municipal Band, and the Nebraska Symphony Chamber Orchestra. He plays saxophones in Group Sax and his own jazz quartet, both of which will be featured in First Friday Jazz performances at First Lutheran Church in 2014.

Dean received his bachelor and master of music degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and has served on the faculty of Nebraska Wesleyan University since 1985, teaching trumpet, brass ensemble, jazz ensemble and jazz improvisation. He is a busy freelance trumpet player, performing with a wide variety of groups in Nebraska, and has toured the United States, Europe, the Caribbean, Australia and Japan. Dean can be heard on a number of record labels, including American Gramophone, Visual Music, Saddle Creek and American Music. He recently returned from Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he performed at the International Trumpet Guild Conference.

Single admission tickets are $25 for Adults and $12.50 for Students. Tickets may be purchased at the door, by contacting the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra business office at (402) 477-8446 or at njo@artsincorporated.org.

Andy Martin

Coming from a musical family, trombonist Andy Martin launched his career while still in his teens. His technique and virtuosity quickly established him on the Los Angeles music scene. His sparkling bebop lines and consummate musicianship make him equally at home on the stage or in the studio, and he maintains a busy schedule in L.A. as a recording artist, sideman, and section player, while traveling frequently for guest appearances.

A world-class jazz musician, Andy has released 12 albums as either leader, or co-leader. They showcase his dazzling improvisation alongside other top jazz artists such as the late Carl Fontana, Pete Christlieb, Bobby Shew, and Eric Marienthal. He has collaborated as a sideman with jazz greats such as Stanley Turrentine and Horace Silver and is well known for his work as a lead player and featured soloist with virtually every big band in L.A. Most notably, Andy is the lead trombonist and featured soloist with Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band. He is also the lead trombonist and soloist for The Tom Kubis Band and soloist for the Bill Holman Big Band.
