Press Release: Nebraska Jazz Orchestra with guest artist Bobby Watson Jan. 14 (1/7/2014)
Nebraska Jazz Orchestra presents

"Learning from the Master," with saxophonist Bobby Watson
and featuring the Young Lions All-Star Band

The Nebraska Jazz Orchestra presents "Learning from the Master," featuring world-renowned saxophonist, composer and educator Bobby Watson of Kansas City, Tuesday, January 14 at The Cornhusker Marriott, 333 South 13th Street in Lincoln, Nebraska. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m.

Watson travels to Lincoln for the Nebraska premiere of his recent composition "The Gates BBQ Suite," a soulful seven-part piece that takes listeners on a musical journey into the world of smoked meats and sauces. The suite, which went to No. 4 on the national jazz airplay chart following its CD release in late 2010, swings from beginning to end, with a slight detour into an Afro-Cuban groove. Before he takes the stage with the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra, Watson will perform a short set with the 2014 Young Lions All-Star Band.

In a career of more than three decades, Bobby Watson has 30 recordings as a leader and has appeared on more than 100 others. His original music includes the soundtrack for the film A Bronx Tale, and the tunes "Time Will Tell," "In Case You Missed It" and "Wheel Within a Wheel."

Watson grew up in Kansas City, Kansas, and trained formally at the University of Miami, but he earned his "doctorate" on the bandstand as music director of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. After four years and more than a dozen recordings with Blakey, he worked with drummers Max Roach and Louis Hayes, saxophonists George Coleman and Branford Marsalis, multi-instrumentalist Sam Rivers and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. He also worked with vocalists Joe Williams, Dianne Reeves, Lou Rawls, Betty Carter and Carmen Lundy.

Bobby's first big-band album was 1992's "Tailor Made." With bassist Curtis Lundy and drummer Victor Lewis, he launched Horizon, an acoustic quintet modeled after the Jazz Messengers but with a distinctly modern twist. In addition to his work with Horizon, Watson also has led a nine-piece group known as the High Court of Swing, a tribute to the music of Johnny Hodges, as well as the Grammy-nominated 16-piece, large ensemble Tailor Made Big Band.

The saxophonist balances his teaching responsibilities as director of jazz studies at the University of Missouri-Kansas City with engagements at major venues worldwide.

Single admission tickets are $25 for Adults and $12.50 for Students. Tickets may be purchased by contacting the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra business office at (402) 477-8446 or njo@artsincorporated.org

For more information please see the NJO Home Page.
