Kick off the fall with some Jazz! The Capital Jazz Society announces its ongoing series of events for September 2010. The Monday Night Big Band performances feature a 17-piece big band and the Lincoln Jazz Series features an array of local and regional jazz artists.
All events are held at Brewsky's Jazz Underground, 201 North 8th Street, Lincoln, NE, from 7:30 to 10:00 p.m.
Admission is $5 for adults and $4 for students with valid ID, or $3 if you bring an instrument and sit in with the band (Mondays only).
Food and full beverage service is available.

Lincoln Municipal Band presents "Salute to the Armed Forces: Appreciating Military Service"

Join the Lincoln Municipal Band as it completes its 2010 Summer Concert Series on Sunday, August 22, 2010 at 7:00 p.m., with a concert entitled "Salute to the Armed Forces." This concert will celebrate the military service of our brave veterans, and will be conducted by Bob Krueger. The band will feature "The Invincible Eagle March," along with "Fantasy on Yankee Doodle," and of course the "Armed Forces Salute."All veterans will be recognized at the concert, during this patriotic selection. Come honor our veterans, bring a picnic dinner, and enjoy a beautiful evening of music, family, and friends!
The featured guest soloist for the evening will be local trumpeter Deborah Bouffard. She will be performing "Slavonic Fantasy" composed by Carl Hohne and arranged by Stephen Bulla.
All Lincoln Municipal Band concerts are held at the John Shildneck Memorial Bandshell in Antelope Park and are FREE and open to the public.
Bob Krueger is a graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (B.M.E in 1984 and M.M. in 1994), Mr. Krueger has been a music teacher in the Lincoln Public Schools since 1985. Currently, he teaches band lessons at Beattie and Maxey elementary schools, and directs Jazz Ensemble I and II at Southeast High School. In 1988 he received the NSBA Jack Snider Award, and in 1989 he was named the nation's outstanding young high school band director by the American School Band Directors Association. In addition to conducting the Lincoln Municipal Band and performing as a member of the band's trumpet section, Mr. Krueger performs with the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra, the Monday Night Big Band, the Nebraska Trumpet Ensemble, and his own jazz combo. He also serves as a clinician and adjudicator throughout the Midwest.
Deborah Bouffard earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Maine and a Master of Music degree in trumpet performance from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Deborah is currently a member of the Lincoln Public Schools instrumental music faculty where she teaches beginning band at Pershing, Hartley, Saratoga and Eastridge Elementary Schools. In addition to performing with the Lincoln Municipal Band, Deborah is presently a member of the Plymouth Brass, the Third Chair Chamber Players and the Nebraska Trumpet Ensemble. |

Lincoln Municipal Band presents “Celebrate the Adventure: Boy Scouts of America’s 100th Birthday”

Join the Lincoln Municipal Band as they continue their 2010 Summer Concert Series on Sunday, August 15, 2010 at 7:00 p.m., with a concert entitled “Celebrate the Adventure.” This concert will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Boy Scouting, and will be conducted by Bob Krueger. The band will feature the “Boy Scouts of America March,” along with “Fantasy on American Sailing Songs,” and “Morning, Noon, and Night in Vienna Overture.” A number of Boy Scout troops will be on hand to demonstrate their skills before the concert. We recommend you come early and watch what these scouts can do, bring a picnic dinner, and enjoy a beautiful evening of music, family, and friends!
The featured guest soloist for the evening will be local hornist Ric Ricker.

Ric Ricker received his Bachelor of Music from the University of Tennessee and Master of Music from Southern Methodist University. Mr. Ricker has performed throughout the United States with many orchestras including the Aspen Festival Orchestra, Knoxville Symphony, Florida Gulf Coast Symphony, Chicago Civic Orchestra, Chicago Symphony, Dallas Symphony, Dallas Opera Orchestra, Fort Worth Symphony, and Nashville Symphony. He has also worked with the Nashville Symphony and Lincoln Orchestra Association in arts management. Mr. Ricker is currently the Sheet Music Manager for Dietze Music House, and horn instructor at Nebraska Wesleyan University. He is an active freelance musician with all the performing groups in the area and a member of the Nebraska Brass.

Join the Lincoln Municipal Band as it continues its 2010 Summer Concert Series on Sunday, August 8, 2010 at 7:00 p.m., with a concert dedicated to John Philip Sousa. This concert, conducted by Terry Rush, will celebrate the music of the March King. The band will feature “The University of Nebraska March” along with “The Flashing Eyes of Andalusia,” and “Solid Men to the Front.” Come celebrate the wonderful tradition of John Philip Sousa’s music and the Lincoln Municipal Band. Bring a picnic dinner, and enjoy a beautiful evening of music, family, and friends!
The featured guest soloist for the evening will be soprano Dawn Pawlewski Krogh. She will be performing “Musica Proibita” and “Zing! Zing! Naughty Marietta”.

Terry R. Rush is the Instrumental Music Director at Lincoln Southwest High School. Prior to this teaching assignment, Terry was the Instrumental Music Director at Lincoln High School for 25 years and was the band director at Pius X High School for five years. Mr. Rush has been a member of the Lincoln Symphony for 36 years and a member of the Lincoln Municipal Band for 38 years. He is currently Assistant Director of the Lincoln Municipal Band and Assistant Conductor of the Lincoln Youth Symphony. He is a member of the Nebraska Music Educators Association, Nebraska State Bandmasters Association, International Association of Jazz Educators, International Trombone Association and Phi Beta Mu Professional Band Directors Fraternity. His wife, Jacque is the band director at Scott Middle School. Together they have three children.
Dawn Pawlewski Krogh is currently a Professor of Voice and the Director of Opera at Nebraska Wesleyan University. She has sung professionally with the Des Moines Metro Opera, Des Moines Symphony, Third Chair Chamber Ensemble, Kansas City Folly Theater, and the Lincoln Opera of Chicago, and has performed opera in Japan, Ireland, and throughout the United States. Dr. Pawlewski Krogh received her Bachelor of Music degree from Simpson College and her Master of Music degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music. In May 2005, she earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from UNL. While working on her DMA at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, she held title roles in the world premiere operas, "The Divine Madness" by Randall Snyder, and "O Pioneers!" by Tyler White. In addition, she won the "Best Female Singer" award at the International Festival of Light Opera in Waterford, Ireland, for her portrayal of Arline in "The Bohemian Girl."

Join the Capital Jazz Society as it presents two special performances to coincide with the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra’s 2010 Nebraska Jazz Camp. The Monday Night Big Band will perform Monday, July 19 2010, 7:30 pm and the Jim Williamson Combo will perform with special guest vocalist, Melissa Lewis, Wednesday, July 21 2010, 7:30 p.m. at Brewsky’s Jazz Underground in the lower level of Brewsky’s Food & Spirits in the Haymarket.
These Capital Jazz Society Events are being presented as a part of the 2010 Nebraska Jazz Camp. This annual camp includes dozens of students from Eastern Nebraska, and CJS is presenting the events as part of their educational experience.
Admission is $6 for adults and $5 for students with valid I.D.

The Nebraska Jazz Camp will also be presenting concerts of their own showcasing the learning that has taken place during the week of Nebraska Jazz Camp, July 19-23. A Big Band concert will be held Thursday, July 22, at 4:30 p.m. and a Jazz Combo concert will be held Friday, July 23, at 2:00 p.m. Both performances are free and will take place in O’Donnell Auditorium on the Nebraska Wesleyan University campus. The Nebraska Jazz Orchestra is pleased to present the 2010 Nebraska Jazz Camp, which will be held next week here in Lincoln. We are proud to be able to continue to offer this outstanding educational experience for young musicians.
Next week, 45 campers from throughout the state and region will learn from the best local and regional jazz musicians, taking part in master classes, intensive rehearsals, playing in big bands and combos, gaining new knowledge and experience and enhancing their passions for music and the arts. Students are joining us this year from Lincoln area schools Culler Middle, Irving Middle, Lefler Middle, Lincoln Christian, Lincoln High, Lincoln Lutheran, Northeast High, Southwest High, Norris High, Pound Middle, Southeast High, and Nebraska Wesleyan Univeristy; from Omaha Central and Omaha Westside High Schools; and from other Nebraska communities including Beatrice, Bellevue, Columbus, Comstock, Crete, Fremont, Grand Island, Hastings, Hershey, Nebraska City, Norfolk, Plattsmouth, Roca and Superior, plus communities in Kansas and Texas!
We invite you to join us as these young musicians showcase their jazz talents at the final camp concerts next week:

Join the Lincoln Municipal Band as it continues its 2010 Summer Concert Series on Sunday, August 1, 2010 at 7:00 p.m., with a concert entitled “On Broadway.” This concert will celebrate music composed for the dramatic stage and will be conducted by Bob Krueger. The band will feature the “Gershwin Medley” along with “Selections from Les Miserables,” and “Symphonic Dances from Fiddler on the Roof.” At the concert, representatives from many of Lincoln’s theater organizations will be present to share information on their upcoming performances. Dean Haist received his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and has served on the faculty of Nebraska Wesleyan University for over 25 years, currently teaching trumpet, brass ensemble, jazz ensemble and jazz improvisation. Mr. Haist is a busy freelance trumpet player, performing with a wide variety of groups in Nebraska, and has toured the United States, Europe, the Caribbean, Japan and Australia. He first started performing with the Lincoln Municipal Band in the early 1970s and has been featured on a regular basis as a soloist since 1975. He serves as Executive Director of the Lincoln Municipal Band, Nebraska Trumpet Ensemble, Nebraska Brass, Nebraska Jazz Orchestra, Capital Jazz Society, as the Business Manager of the Lincoln Midwest Ballet Company and is currently President of the Association of Nonprofit Executives. Mr. Haist can be heard on a number of record labels, including American Gramophone, Visual Music, American Music and Suddle Creek Records.

Join the Lincoln Municipal Band as they continue their 2010 Summer Concert Series on Sunday, July 25, 2010 at 7:00 p.m., with a concert entitled “Young at Heart.” This concert will celebrate our mature concert goers and will be conducted by Bob Krueger. The band will feature the “The Purple Pageant March” along with “A Tribute to Harry James,” and “Funiculi, Funicula.” Starting at 6:00 pm there will be a variety of classic cars on display so we recommend you come early to see these majestic automobiles. Bring a picnic dinner, and enjoy a beautiful evening of music, family, and friends!
The featured guest soloist for the evening will be soprano Lorrie Beadell. She will be performing “Without a Song” by Vincent Youmans and “Tonight/Somewhere” from West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein.

Lorraine Beadell, lyric soprano, received her musical education at the University of Nebraska where she earned Bachelor of Science and Master of Music degrees. She did additional study in voice at the Aspen (Colorado) Music Institute. She has had extensive solo experience as a recitalist as well as opera and oratorio roles. She has performed as soprano soloist with the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra, Lincoln Municipal Band, Abendmusik:Lincoln and the Third Chair Chamber Players. Now retired from teaching, she has served on the voice faculties of the University of Nebraska- Lincoln, University of Nebraska- Omaha, and Nebraska Wesleyan University. She is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda honorary and the National Association of Teachers of Singing. She is married to Greg Love, a pilot and flight instructor, and they live in Lincoln with their Bengal cat, Abby.
