NJO: Learning From a Young Master

The Nebraska Jazz Orchestra proudly announces its third concert of the 2002-2003 season with a program
entitled Learning From A Young Master. This concert will feature the return of 16-year old piano sensation Eldar Djangirov and the Young Lions All-Star Band.

The concert will be held at the Cornhusker Hotel, 333 S. 13th Street, Lincoln, on Wednesday, January 22nd at
7:30 p.m. Priority seating for season ticket members only starts at 7:00-7:15, and general admission seating begins at 7:15 for tickets purchased at the door.

General admission tickets may be purchased at the concert or ordered in advance by contacting the business office at Arts Incorporated (See below). Ticket prices are: $6 for students, $15 for senior citizens, and $18 for adults.

Pianist, Eldar Djangirov, born in Kyrgyzstan in the former Soviet Union and now a native of Kansas City, Missouri, has performed on the Grammy Awards as well as at the Millennium Stage of Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. He recently won first place at the 2002 Peter Nero Piano Competition. Eldar has also been a participant in several jazz festivals including Roswell, Santa Fe New Mexico; and Palm Springs, California and often performs for Kansas City concert audiences. He has made several television and radio performances as well as started his own musical group called “Eldar Djangirov Trio” and recently released his first CD entitled Eldar.

This concert will also feature the 2003 Young Lions All-Star Band. The band is comprised of young Nebraska jazz musicians who auditioned to be a part of the select group. They will play “Blues for Waldo,” by Dave Barduhn, Victor Young’s “Stella by Starlight” as arranged by Frank Mantooth, “Soul Sauce” by Dizzy Gillespie & Chano Pozo, arranged by Steve Owen and “88 Basie Street,” by Sammy Nestico.

The Nebraska Jazz Orchestra will perform Mark Benson’s “Skank 7,” Chick Corea’s “Sea Journey” as arranged by Dave Pearson, Mark Benson’s “Thelonious Assault,” Sammy Nestico’s “Pressure Cooker,” “Steve’s Blues”
by Steve Allen, and “I Got Rhythm” by George Gershwin and arranged by Rob McConnell.
