NEBRASKA JAZZ ORCHESTRA ANNOUNCES WINNER OF THE 2009 YOUNG JAZZ ARTIST COMPETITION

Lincoln, NE -- The Nebraska Jazz Orchestra has announced the first and second place winners in the 2009 Young Jazz Artist Competition. First place honors went to Karl Lyden, trombone; finishing second place was Kevin Lloyd, piano.

The winner, Karl Lyden, receives a cash prize and will perform with the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra at its first concert of the 2009-2010 Season. The performance will take place Thursday, October 29, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. at the Cornhusker Marriott Hotel, 333 South 13th Street, Lincoln. General admission tickets may be purchased at the concert or ordered in advance by contacting the business office at (402) 477-8446 or njo@artsincorporated.org. Ticket prices are: Adults $20, Students $10. Priority seating for season ticket holders and Jazz Club members is at 7:00 p.m. General admission seating begins at 7:15 p.m. Season tickets for the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra’s 2009-2010 season are also available, $64 for adults and $32 for seniors, with a 50% discount for new subscribers.

The Young Jazz Artist Competition and performance are sponsored by the Dillon Foundation.

Karl Lyden is an active trombone player in the Lincoln and Omaha area. He graduated from Westside High School and currently attends the University of Nebraska-Lincoln as a double major in music performance and environmental studies. In high school, Karl was involved in band, jazz band, show band, several jazz combos, and the Metropolitan Area Youth Jazz Orchestra. He also participated in events such as the UNL Winter Winds and Percussion Festival, UNL Honor Jazz Weekend, and Young Lions All-Star Band. Karl was the recipient of the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award as well as numerous solo awards at jazz festivals around the Midwest. Karl has studied with G.P. George, Mark Mendell, Pete Madsen, and most recently, Scott Anderson. At UNL, Karl participates in the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble I, and Jazz Combos II and III. He is also the most recent addition to Double Shot, a progressive fusion sextet based in Omaha that pushes the envelope of jazz and is in the process of cutting its first studio album.

Kevin Lloyd is originally from Lincoln and graduated from Lincoln Northeast High School in 2006. Kevin is currently attending the University of Nebraska at Omaha as a Music Tech major. Kevin has been playing piano since around age 3 and got his first professional gig at age 13 playing at Lee’s Restaurant in Lincoln. Kevin has since gone on to perform with numerous known musicians including but not limited to Randy Brecker, Hubert Laws, Eric Marienthal, Jim Widner, and Magic Slim.
