FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, JANUARY 2008

NEBRASKA BRASS PRESENTS: "NEBRASKA BRASS & FRIENDS" AND WORLD PREMIERE OF "PARTITA ANTICO" BY JOHN CHEETHAM

Contact: Nebraska Brass, 402-477-7899, nb@artsincorporated.org

Start off the new year with "Nebraska Brass & Friends," the third concert series in the Nebraska Brass's 2007-2008 season, "American Premieres." Each concert showcases new major works for brass quintet commissioned by the Nebraska Brass from five internationally renowned composers. For this special event, Nebraska Brass will be joined by percussionist Joe Holmquist, and will feature the world premiere of John Cheetham's new composition, "Partita Antico." Inspired by the baroque keyboard suites of J.S. Bach, "Partita Antico" is decidedly baroque in character, both harmonically and structurally. Dr. Cheetham's use of asymmetric meters and rhythms are a departure from the compositional techniques associated with that period of music history, giving a "new life" to a still viable musical form.

John Cheetham, Professor Emeritus of Music Theory and Composition at the University of Missouri-Columbia, received his Bachelor and Masters degrees from the University of New Mexico in 1962 and 1965, and a Doctoral of Musical Arts in Composition from the University of Washington in 1969. During his tenure at Missouri from 1969 to 2000, Dr. Cheetham has written compositions for virtually all media and his works have been widely performed and recorded in the United States and abroad, and published commercially. In addition, Dr. Cheetham has been granted numerous commissions including those from the Kentucky Derby Museum, Texas Tech University, Atlanta Symphony Brass Quintet, Central Oklahoma Directors Association, Springfield (MO) Symphony, Summit Brass and the Air Force Band of the Midwest, as well as from several individual soloists. Dr. Cheetham has received the ASCAP Special Awards from 1988 through the present, in 1992 he won the Abraham Frost Prize in Composition and has been the recipient of a Centennial Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of New Mexico.

Joe Holmquist is a performer, educator and composer. A generalist in percussion, he is at home playing all the instruments in the family. He received a Master of Music from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. As an educator, Mr. Holmquist is known most broadly for his drumset etude books. Currently, he works in Lincoln as a freelance percussionist and has toured across the nation and through western Europe.
